Proof coins can sometimes show the evidence of improper storage quicker than similar mint-state examples. This proof strike example of a 1942 P Silver War Nickel had spent many years in a less than ideal storage configuration. Poor holders can allow substances in the environment to develop residues on the surface of the coin within. A combination of PVC and environmental residues had developed in an even layer on the surface of this otherwise white coin.

The conservators at NCS have developed techniques to remove such hazy residues and employed those techniques to clear up the haze on this Silver War Nickel. Once the residues were removed, the true beauty of the coin underneath was revealed. This coin was able to grade numerically well with NGC following the conservation work
