Original mint packaging is far from ideal for long-term storage. This 1987-S Proof US Constitution Commemorative coin is a prime example of what can happen to coins left in original mint packaging. Hazy residues have developed on both sides of the coin, appearing strongest at the rims. This residue is unattractive and can change the surface over time, giving it an unattractive look. For this coin, the haze had not yet begun to damage the surfaces. The NCS conservators were able to remove the hazy residues and brighten the coin. This modern commemorative was able to grade much better after conservation than it would have without, and does qualify for the NCS Modern Tier, offering one low price for both conservation and grading.
