While toning can be a desirable attribute, not all toning, even when occurring in a natural way, can be desirable. This 1938 D Jefferson Nickel was submitted to NGC in an effort to remove the unusual and unattractive toning that had developed on the surfaces. The surfaces were first cleared of any residues that may be causing the bizarre color and then the core of the problem was tackled. Once the toning was removed, the surfaces were left with an even pleasing tone known to many numismatists familiar with nickel coinage. This coin was able to grade very well with NGC following the conservation.
