JA Auctions Offers NGC-certified 1910 Coin Commemorating Peninsular War
Posted on 7/8/2026
A 20th century coin commemorating a pivotal moment in Portugal’s history is among the many NGC®-certified world coins offered to collectors in JA Auctions’ Auction 1 on July 19, 2026.
The Portugal 1910 1,000 Réis Silver Peninsular War Centennial graded NGC PF 63 Cameo (lot 78) commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Peninsular War (1808-1814), when Portuguese and British forces fought to expel Napoleon's armies from the Iberian Peninsula. Its obverse features a portrait of Portugal’s King Manuel II by engraver Venâncio Alves, while the reverse displays the nation’s crowned royal coat of arms above the inscription CENTENARIO DA GUERRA PENINSULAR (“Centenary of the Peninsular War”). It was one of the final commemorative silver coins issued under the Portuguese monarchy before the revolution of October 1910 abolished the kingdom and established the Portuguese Republic, making it an especially significant historical and numismatic artifact.
