NGC-certified Continental Dollar Realizes $1.3 Million in Heritage Sale
Posted on 6/29/2026
With a price realized of more than $1 million, a Silver Continental Dollar certified by NGC® led the way in a Heritage Auctions sale of historic collectibles. It was easily the best result in the Liberty & Legacy: 250 Years of the American Spirit Americana & Political Signature® Auction #6332, which concluded June 25, 2026, just days before the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
One of only four silver examples known, the 1776 Continental Dollar graded NGC VF 35 realized $1,312,500. It is one of two known in silver of the Newman 1-C variety, which includes the spelling of CURENCY on the obverse and the 13 states' names on the reverse in interlocking rings. It is pedigreed to coin dealer Don Corrado Romano and elite collector Donald G. Partrick.
The Continental Dollars are an enigma in numismatics. Some evidence points to an origin in New York City, before it was captured by the British in 1776, several weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Others theorize they were struck years later in England. They are most commonly found in brass and pewter.
NGC has also certified the other three examples of Silver Continental Dollars, which have sold through Heritage Auctions:
- a Newman 1-C variety graded NGC XF 40 and pedigreed to the Garrett and Partrick Collections, which realized $1,527,500 in January 2015
- a Newman 3-D variety graded NGC MS 62 and pedigreed to the Boyd and Partrick Collections, which realized $1,527,500 in January 2015
- a Newman 3-D variety graded NGC MS 63 and pedigreed to the Green and Newman Collections, which realized $1,410,000 in May 2014
Prices realized include buyer's premium.
