The Best of the Mint is a series created by the US Mint to honor the 250th anniversary of US independence through five coins that were selected through public input and expert recommendations. The series showcases 24-karat reissued gold coins alongside silver medals that utilize modern designs inspired by their companions. The 1916 Mercury Dime Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set is the first of the Best of the Mint semiquincentennial series.

2026 marks the 110th anniversary of the first year of issue of the Mercury Dime (also known as the Winged Liberty dime). The new set includes a re-creation of the original Mercury Dime as a 24-karat gold coin, depicting the bust of Liberty facing left, wearing a winged cap symbolizing freedom of thought. In commemoration of the semiquincentennial of the founding of the U.S., the coin also features a unique "250" Liberty Bell privy mark.

The Best of the Mint Silver Companion Medal to the 1916 Mercury Dime features a modern design that continues from obverse to reverse. Rays emit from the tip of the sword, extending from the obverse design to the reverse design, symbolizing hope at the end of conflict.

The other selected coins in the Best of the Mint series that will release at a later date include: the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar, the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the 1804 Silver Dollar, and the 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin.

The NGC America250™ certification label will be available for several upcoming releases during this year's Semiquincentennial celebrations, including the 1916 Mercury Dime Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set. For coins and medals to qualify for the Early Releases and First Releases designations, NGC must receive submissions within the first 30 days of release.
