Stack’s Bowers Galleries Offers NGC-certified Mexican Coinage from Menczer Collection

Posted on 6/5/2026

The auction on June 23-24 includes some of the finest examples of 19th century Mexican reales denominations.

More selections from an impressive collection of Mexican coins that are certified by NGC® are available in a Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction this month. Online bidding is already underway for coins from the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors, with Session 1 and Session 2 ending on June 23 and 24, 2026, respectively.

Among the highlights of this sale is a Mexico 1824DO RL Real - Reversed Superscript S graded NGC VF Details (Session 1, lot 72280), with an estimate of $5,000 to $7,000. This example is one of the earliest silver coins issued by the newly independent Mexican Republic after the adoption of the 1824 Constitution. Struck at the Durango Mint and bearing the assayer initials RL, the coin features the distinctive “Profile Eagle” or “Hookneck Eagle” design used only during the Republic’s first years. The reversed superscript “S” is a famous variety created during the hand-punched die-making process and is considerably scarcer than the normal version.

Today, this coin is regarded as one of the key rarities of early Mexican Republican coinage, and it carries a provenance from one of the most impressive collections of Mexican coinage. After Menczer passed away in February 2025, his obituary noted that he had “immersed himself in coins” and that “his unflagging willingness to share his expertise, mentor young collectors, and grow the numismatic community leaves a lasting legacy.”
