NGC Conservation: Clear Improvement

Posted on 5/12/2026

Even modern coins can develop unattractive residues due to improper storage conditions or inferior holders.

When coins are stored in improper conditions, they often end up with PVC residue or other unsightly and harmful contaminants blemishing the surfaces. Fortunately, NGC Conservation is here to help. NGC's conservationists use a variety of proprietary techniques to remove these harmful surface contaminants, stabilizing and protecting a coin's surfaces. Often, these conservation efforts also improve a coin's eye appeal. After coins are conserved, they are seamlessly transferred for NGC grading and encapsulation.

This month, NGC's conservationists encountered several coins with hazing residues and other greasy films affecting their surfaces. Here are a few highlights of the coins that were conserved by NGC Conservation throughout the month of April:

2020-S Sacagawea Anti-Discrimination Law Dollar

Harmful residues can form as a result of poor storage conditions, or long-term storage in holders that are less than ideal. This 2020-S Sacagawea anti-discrimination law issue was recently submitted to NGC to address a heavy, greasy residue that had formed over the entire surface of the coin. NGC Conservation has developed specific techniques to safely remove harmful residues from coins of various metallic composition without damaging the surfaces underneath. This Sacagawea Dollar was freed from all the greasy residues affecting it, and as a result, graded very well with NGC.

Maldives 1984 100 Rufiyaa Proof

Heavy hazing residues are ugly, and can potentially permanently damage a coin's surface if left unchecked. This silver commemorative Maldives 1984 100 Rufiyaa was submitted to NGC Conservation to remove a hazing residue that had developed evenly across the surface's fields. Residues such as this often form on coins that have been stored for a long time in holders that are inferior. Once the offending residue was carefully removed without damaging the coin's surface underneath, the Proof coin was able to grade well with NGC.

France 1979A 50 Franc Piefort

Gold coins can develop the same kind of hazing residues that form on coins of other alloys if they are stored in holders that don't protect properly. This gold France 1979A 50 Franc Piefort arrived at NGC Conservation with a request to remove the distracting hazy residue that had formed on the reverse. Removal of such residues is a process that NGC's professional conservators are well versed in safely performing without harming the coin's surface underneath. Following conservation, this coin was revealed to be in excellent condition and graded well with NGC.
