NGC-certified Mexican Coins Available in Stack's Bowers' Menczer Collection Sale, Including an Exceptional Rarity

Posted on 10/9/2025

Among the hundreds of coins in the October 21-22 sale is a seldom-seen 1888 50 Centavo, with fewer than five known.

An impressive assembly of rare and collectible Mexican coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) is being offered in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ auction of the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors. Online bidding is already underway for more than 800 coins (which are all NGC-certified) in Session 1 and Session 2, being held on October 21-22, 2025.

The top lot in the auction sessions is a Mexico 1888MO M 50 Centavos graded NGC VF 35 (Session 2, lot 72285), with an estimate of $5,000 to $8,000. This historic coin was struck at the Mexico City Mint as part of the Balance Scale series, and represents a pivotal transition year when nearly all mints produced only a handful of 50 Centavos. This was likely by government order, with the coins serving as presentation pieces or samples rather than for circulation. No more than five examples are believed to exist, with this one being the only example in the NGC Census, making this coin a crown jewel for collectors.

Kirk Menczer built an impressive collection of Republican Decimal Minors — coins that are smaller than the Peso. The auction offerings are focused on the second half of the 19th century. After Menczer passed away in February 2025, his obituary noted that he had “immersed himself in coins” and that “his unflagging willingness to share his expertise, mentor young collectors, and grow the numismatic community leaves a lasting legacy.”
