More Than a Dozen NGC-certified Rarities Realize Six Figures in Stack's Bowers Galleries August Auction

Posted on 9/16/2025

The two sessions included coins from the musician Rick Springfield's personal collection.

More than a dozen NGC-certified coins, including a high-grade 1909 Saint-Gaudens Proof Double Eagle, realized six figures in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Summer 2025 Global Showcase Auction. The coins were included in Session 4 and Session 5 of the auction, both of which ended on August 27, 2025.

The 1909 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle graded NGC PF 68 (session 5, lot 3427) realized $336,000, becoming the leading NGC-certified coin in the sale. A mere 26 examples of this Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle are listed in the NGC Census, with only one graded higher than this. The 1909 Proof Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was one of the first gold coins to have a satin finish, which yielded brighter coins than previous issues. Unfortunately, they still proved unpopular, and the Philadelphia Mint only released 67 of these 1909 Proof Double Eagles.

Meanwhile, an 1825 Quarter Eagle graded NGC MS 65 pedigreed to the Eric P. Newman Collection (session 4, lot 2007) realized $240,000. It led a group of NGC-certified coins in an auction session devoted to gold rarities owned by Rick Springfield — a musician known for his 1980s hit song “Jessie’s Girl.” The Philadelphia Mint struck a mere 4,434 examples of this Quarter Eagle in 1825 and many of them were later melted down, leading to a scarce population of no more than 150 coins.
