NGC’s David W. Lange Inducted into the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame

Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) is proud to share that David W. Lange (1958–2023), its longtime Director of Research and one of the most respected figures in the hobby, has been posthumously inducted into the American Numismatic Association (ANA) Numismatic Hall of Fame. The announcement was made ahead of the ANA World’s Fair of Money®, taking place in Oklahoma City from August 19 to 23, 2025.

Lange joins a distinguished group of collectors, scholars and hobby professionals recognized by the ANA for their enduring impact on numismatics. The Numismatic Hall of Fame, located at ANA headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado, was established in the 1960s to honor individuals whose achievements have helped shape and elevate the hobby. Lange is one of two individuals selected for the 2025 induction, alongside former ANA President Kenneth Hallenbeck.

Over a remarkable career, Lange published nearly 1,000 articles and authored 10 influential books, including The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes and History of the United States Mint and Its Coinage. His writing blended deep expertise with elegance and wit, making even technical numismatic subjects accessible and engaging.

From 1988 until his passing in 2023, Lange contributed the widely read “USA Coin Album” column to The Numismatist, the ANA’s monthly publication. He was a fixture at ANA Summer Seminars and an enthusiastic educator whose courses inspired generations of collectors. An ANA member since 1978, he was honored with many of the association’s highest accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, Numismatist of the Year (2017) and, most recently, the 2023 Burnett Anderson Memorial Award for Excellence in Numismatic Writing.

Lange joined NGC in 1994 and served as its Director of Research for nearly three decades. In recognition of his enduring legacy, the NGC Registry Awards introduced the David W. Lange Overall Achievement Award in 2024, honoring collectors whose passion and dedication echo Lange’s lifelong contributions to the hobby. Lange’s induction into the Numismatic Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to a man whose expertise and passion continue to inspire the numismatic community.
