Do You Wish That You Had Springfield's Coins? Now's Your Chance
Posted on 7/14/2025
Stack's Bowers Galleries is offering gold rarities from the collection of singer Rick Springfield, including a dozen certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®). Two rare overdates that are likely to realize prices well into the six figures are among these coins, being offered in the Summer 2025 Global Showcase Auction, which will be held August 27, 2025.
Among the top NGC-certified rarities in the auction is a 1796/5 Half Eagle graded NGC MS 63. This issue and the 1796/5 Half Dime are the US Mint's earliest instances of an overdate, in which a die engraved with another year is updated, typically by re-cutting only the final digit. Only a few dozen of these coins are known to survive today, and the NGC Census contains only four graded higher than the one in this auction.
Another rare overdate, an 1806/4 Quarter Eagle graded NGC MS 64, is also featured in this auction. Only 22 are recorded in the NGC Census and this is the sole-finest example.
Springfield is perhaps best-known for 1980s hit songs including "Jessie's Girl" as well as his work as an actor in General Hospital and other shows and movies.
“We are the stewards of these historical items for a period in time,” Springfield said in a Stack's Bowers press release about the upcoming auction of his coins. “My hope is the next collector who takes possession will love them as much as I have. In fact, I’d like to personally meet the most significant buyer in this sale. To facilitate that meeting, I am giving the buyer two tickets and two VIP backstage passes to one of my concerts in the city of their choice.”
