Not every silver coin is best in white. There are many instances when a coin’s toning becomes obscured by residue. Professional conservators can frequently remove residue while retaining much of the color a coin had prior to conservation – toning can even appear more vibrant once residue is removed.

The evaluators agreed that the toning on this 1941 quarter was certainly a benefit to this particular coin, being attractive and uniform. The dulling brownish residue, however, was not a help, especially the spots throughout its obverse.

The NCS conservators were able to remove the dulling residues from both sides of this coin while leaving the toning that gave this coin its appealing look. This coin was able to grade with NGC numerically following the conservation.
