A vintage Russian rarity linked to Peter the Great is among more than 600 coins and medals certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are being offered in a pair of upcoming auctions. Bidding is already underway for The New York Sale's Auction 62: Russian Coins, Orders and Medals, which concludes on January 14, 2025, and Auction 63: Ancient & World Coins, which concludes on January 16, 2025.
The top NGC-certified highlight of the auction is a Russia (1702-dated) Gold Medal - Novodel graded NGC MS 64 and pedigreed to Hutten-Czapski (lot 4), with an estimate of $500,000. Struck in the earliest years of the Great Northern War, which lasted from 1700 to 1721, Tsar Peter rewarded his military commanders with gold medals like this one for their first victory of the war against the Swedish Empire in January 1702. The medal features the bust of a young Peter the Great on the obverse and the coat of arms of Russia on the reverse.
