NGC Featured Registry Set: Canada 2 Dollar Commemoratives
Posted on 10/15/2024
Canadians everywhere recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the esteemed Royal Canadian Air Force. In honor of this important milestone in Canadian history, the Royal Canadian Mint just released two new circulating $2 coins in mid-September. As such, this month, we feature a Canada Two Dollar commemorative NGC Registry set, by LTMcCord, found here.
This set is quite interesting in its unique nature. It is not full of gleaming, brand-new, perfect 70s straight from the RCM. Rather, this is an assembly of “Toonies,” everyday circulating 2 Dollar coins. Upon closer inspection of each coin, one will see each piece is not just legal tender but that it also has commemorative significance. The 2020 “Top Pop” NGC MS 67, above, for example, offers a stylized portrayal of a grizzly bear. The words “Bill” and “Reid” reveal the cultural significance of this coin. Bill Reid was a well-known, successful artist who, for more than 50 years, produced works representative of the Haida culture and was also an advocate for further rights of the indigenous groups in Canada. This issue celebrates the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Another attention-grabbing coin in this set is the 2017 Dance of the Spirits coin. Minted in honor of Canada’s 150th anniversary, this coin features aurora borealis, the Northern Lights. Be sure to turn out the lights if this coin is in hand. Why? Darkness is a prerequisite to fully appreciate the effects of this glow-in-the-dark issue!
In addition to the issues reflective of cultural and artistic influences, there are multiple coins with Canadian military and historical significance. There are issues for the World War I Armistice, the War of 1812, Battle of the Atlantic, Prime Minister John Macdonald and many more. Be sure to peruse the gallery of LTMcCord’s #1 ranked set for images of all of these coins and others. The new RCAF 2 Dollar coins (colorized and non-colorized issues) may also be added to this set now, as slots are ready and waiting!

Perhaps we will choose someone whose set has a personal story behind it or some interesting historical facts. We are looking for those sets where someone has taken the time to make the set unique and a reflection of his or her personal collecting style. It may be your set! Stay tuned.
