NGC Special Labels and Designations for the 2024 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal
Posted on 10/8/2024
On October 15, 2024, the US Mint is releasing the 2024 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal, which pays homage to America’s first dollar coin: the Flowing Hair Dollar that was first issued on October 15, 1794. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the 2024 Uncirculated silver medal has a product limit of only 75,000 and serves as a companion to the 2024 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair High Relief Gold Coin, which is being released in November.
To complement the certified medals, Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) is offering a selection of special labels, including one showing the medal in front of an American flag, as well as the ever-popular NGC Early Releases and First Releases labels.

The obverse portrays a reproduction of the first dollar coin ever struck by the US Mint, which shows a portrait of Lady Liberty facing to the right. Her image is surrounded by 15 stars, representing the 15 states that had ratified the Constitution by 1794. Originally designed by Robert Scot, the US Mint Chief Engraver from 1793 to 1823, this modern anniversary rendition's obverse was resculpted by John P. McGraw.
The medal's reverse also stays faithful to the 1794 original. Resculpted by Eric David Custer, the medal features a laurel wreath surrounding an eagle with spread wings in the center, which is an early predecessor to the American heraldic eagle.
The US Mint will include a "230" privy mark on 1,794 of the medals, or fewer than 1 in every 40.
