Quarter Eagle Certified by NGC Realizes More than $400,000 in Stack's Bowers Auction
Posted on 8/28/2024
A legendary US coin led a group of 10 vintage rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that each realized more than $100,000 in a recent sale presented by Stack's Bowers Galleries. The auction house's Global Showcase Auction - Session 3 - Rarities Night was held on August 13, 2024.
The top NGC-certified lot in the sale was an 1854-S Quarter Eagle graded NGC AU 50 (lot 3286) that realized $408,000. These classic coins were the first Quarter Eagles ever created at the San Francisco Mint, struck on the same day as the famous 1854-S Half Eagles. The original mintage was miniscule and only about a dozen examples survive today, making this issue one of the most elusive Quarter Eagles in the hobby, according to the auction house. This is the finest of the seven examples listed in the NGC Census.
Other NGC-certified highlights in the auction included:
- an 1888 Double Eagle graded NGC PF 65 Cameo (lot 3473) that realized $216,000
- an 1803 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 64+ (lot 3193) that realized $168,000
