US and Confederate Coins, Certified by NGC, Offered in Stack's Bowers Sale
Posted on 7/17/2024
Hundreds of vintage American and Confederate coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®), and banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®), are available to collectors in the Stack’s Bowers Global Showcase Auction on August 13, 2024.
Among the NGC-certified coins featured in this auction is an 1861 O 50 Cents graded CGC SP 62+ (lot 3141). The history of this coin begins with Louisiana's secession from the Union on January 26, 1861, and the New Orleans Mint's seizure by state forces on January 31. Initially, Federal employees continued their roles under the State of Louisiana until the Mint was transferred to the Confederate States of America. The Mint's officials swore allegiance to the Confederacy. Despite the secession, minting of the half dollar began in January 1861, producing 330,000 coins under the United States. Following the secession, the Mint produced 1,240,000 additional half dollars under state authority in February and March, before the Confederacy took control on April 1. The Confederacy struck 962,633 more half-dollars in April before ceasing operations due to exhausted bullion supplies.
