Two NGC-certified Chinese Coins Each Realize More than $800,000 in Heritage Sale

Posted on 7/8/2024

The modern gold coins, each weighing a kilogram, led the way in a June auction highlighting Chinese rarities.

Two very large gold coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) each realized more than $800,000 in a Heritage Auctions sale focused on Chinese rarities. The HKINF World & Ancient Coins Platinum Session and Signature® Auction was held June 19-21, 2024.

At the top of the auction was a China 1992 1 Kilogram Gold 2,000 Yuan - Compass with Serial Number 08 graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo (lot 30125), which realized $816,000. This coin was among the earliest kilogram gold coins struck anywhere, which are highly sought by collectors of Chinese numismatics. From a mintage of just 10, this coin celebrated the invention of the compass.

Another coin from the same series of inventions and discoveries also realized $816,000: a China 1992 Gold 2,000 Yuan - Seismograph with Serial Number 008 graded NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo (lot 30126). Both the compass and the seismograph were invented in China during the Han dynasty, which ruled China almost uninterrupted for four centuries starting in 202 B.C. This particular coin's serial number of 8 is considered lucky in China because it sounds similar to the Chinese word for fortune.
