Russian Platinum Rarity Certified by NGC Leads the Way in Polish Auction

A vintage Russian rarity is among dozens of world and ancient coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are available in an upcoming Antykwariat Numizmatyczny Michal Niemczyk sale. Bidding is already underway for Auction 44, Session I-IV, which will take place June 22-25, 2024.
The top NGC-certified coin in the sale is a Russia 1830 CNB 6 Rubles graded NGC XF 45 (Session I, lot 1113), with a starting price of 40,000 PLN (about $9,800). Dated to the reign of Emperor Nicholas I, this rare platinum coin was created due to a gold shortage in Russia. Russia issued the world’s first platinum coins in the first half of the 19th century, and this particular issue had a mintage of only 8,610 coins, most of which may have been melted down later. Today, there are only 31 examples in the NGC Census.
Other NGC-certified highlights in the auction include:
- a Poland 1585 NB Lithuania Taler graded NGC UNC Details (Session I, lot 347) that has a starting price of 30,000 PLN (about $7,400)
- a Netherlands 1715 Holland Ducat graded NGC MS 61 (Session IV, lot 5126) that has a starting price of 25,000 PLN (about $6,150)
- a Poland 1930 Danzig 25 Gulden graded NGC MS 66 (Session II, lot 2303) that has a starting price of 12,000 PLN (about $3,000)
- a Danzig 1923 5 Gulden graded NGC MS 63 (Session II, lot 2306) that has a starting price of 4,000 PLN (about $1,000)
- a Czechoslovakia 1933 Ducat graded NGC MS 64 (Session IV, lot 5060) that has a starting price of 3,500 PLN (about $850)
- an Eastern Roman Empire, Theodosius II AD 402-450 Gold Solidus graded NGC Ancients AU, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface (Session III, lot 4378) that has a starting price of 2,000 PLN (about $500)
