NGC Registry Featured Set: Summer Olympics Set

Summer is fast approaching, and so are the eagerly awaited Summer 2024 Olympics. The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games reportedly will be the biggest organized event in the history of France. According to Olympics.com, this event will encompass 35 venues, 10,500 athletes, millions of spectators and billions of television viewers.

Not only are the Olympic Games popular, so too is the wide array of Olympic coinage that is minted by countries all around the world. As such, this month, we feature an NGC Summer Olympic Games, Host Country Coinage Complete Set by Tom Carr, found here.

Tom Carr is no stranger to Olympic coinage from around the world. Recipient of the esteemed David W. Lange Overall Achievement Award and winner of countless NGC Registry Best in Category awards, Tom ranks in the top 10 of several NGC Olympic coinage sets.

In this featured Summer Host Country Complete set, Tom sits at 21% completion and is in the coveted first place spot. “Only” 21% complete and in first place? "How is this possible?" one may ask. Do not be deceived by percentages in this set. Tom currently boasts 168 coins, all with images and comments! As of now, to fill this set dating back to 1952, one would need 764 coins!

Started back in 2020, this set is a labor of love and is loaded with lustrous examples of NGC Top Pop silver and gold pieces. Be sure to peruse the comprehensive gallery here. This set is markedly unique; one may view the widely varied numismatic designs of a multitude of countries all in one lovely presentation. It is a numismatic education and a true pleasure to navigate through the slideshow.

As mentioned, Tom currently holds bragging rights to the number one position. However, he has a few competitors who are not far behind him in this set. As the new NGC Registry Awards period is upon is, there is still plenty of time for other collectors to move up in the ranks and knock Tom off his proverbial podium.
