NGC-certified $4 Stella Lights Up June Heritage Sale
Posted on 5/9/2024
A fabled gold coin with an unusual denomination is among more than 500 rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Online bidding begins in late May for the Long Beach Expo US Coins Signature Auction, which will be held June 13-16.
One of the top lots of the auction is an 1879 Flowing Hair $4 Stella graded NGC PF 66 Cameo, which is among the finer-graded in the NGC Census. The Stellas were a gold pattern created with the vision of an American coin that would be readily accepted in international trade. Only a few hundred were struck with dates of 1879 and 1880 in two varieties: Flowing Hair and Coiled Hair.

The Stellas never went into production for circulation, but their unusual denomination and background have fascinated numismatists for generations. The auction also includes another NGC-certified 1879 Flowing Hair Stella; it has a grade of NGC PF 58+.
