SINCONA Offers Seldom-seen British Gold Patterns Certified by NGC

Posted on 4/11/2024

The auction on May 13-15 also includes hundreds of other NGC-certified coins and medals from Europe.

Two seldom-seen gold patterns from the opposite ends of the six-decade reign of British King George III are among hundreds of world coins and medals certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) being offered in an upcoming auction. Bidding is already underway for SINCONA Auction 90, which concludes on May 13-15, 2024.

The top lot in this auction is a Great Britain 1817 Gold Pattern Crown graded NGC PF 63+ Ultra Cameo (lot 1267), which has a starting price of 300,000 CHF (about $332,000). Struck near the end of the reign of George III, who ruled from 1760 to 1820, this coin is one of only seven examples known to exist, according to the auction house. This pattern, a proposed design for a coin, was engraved by William Wyon, best known for his venerated "Una and the Lion" design over two decades later.

Meanwhile, a coin from near the beginning of George III’s reign is also being offered. A Great Britain 1768 Gold Pattern 2 Guineas graded NGC PF 64 Ultra Cameo (lot 1261) has a starting price of 150,000 CHF (about $166,000). This is the highest numerically graded of the seven examples in the NGC Census and the only one to earn the Ultra Cameo designation. The 2 Guinea and 5 Guinea patterns were struck only sporadically during the time of George III because the high-value denominations were not needed for ordinary commerce.
