NGC-certified Italian Rarity from the 16th Century Among the Offerings in a Nomisma Aste Sale
Posted on 4/9/2024
An Italian coin expected to sell for six figures leads an exciting selection of more than 80 rare European coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) in a pair of upcoming auctions focused on Italian rarities. Bidding is already underway for Nomisma Aste's Auction 6 and Auction 7, which are being held May 4-5, 2024.
One of the highlights of the auctions is an Italy 1590 Papal States 4 Scudi d'Oro graded NGC AU 53 (Auction 7, lot 1537), with a starting price of €150,000 (about $162,500). This extremely rare coin features a depiction of an angel with St. Peter, while the other side includes the words SEDE VACANT near the rim. "Sede vacante" is a term used when there is no pope, which happened twice in 1590. Pope Sixtus V passed away in August; his successor, Pope Urban VII, held office for only 12 days in September before he died of malaria; and Pope Gregory XIV wasn’t selected until December.
