Posted on 3/12/2024
Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) has been named the Official Grading Service of the 2024 Hong Kong Show Panda 40th Anniversary Commemorative Medals. These Show Pandas are being released at the Hong Kong International Coin Convention (HICC), which is being held at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile, Hong Kong, on April 9-11, 2024.
The medals are being offered by respected numismatic dealer Michael Chou, Champion Auction President. They were designed by China’s leading Panda designer and winner of the 2017 Krause Publications’ Lifetime Achievement Award for Design, Yu Min. NGC has graded hundreds of the medals, which are each encapsulated with a distinguished signature label featuring Min’s image and autograph, to capture the excitement of their release at the show.
“These exquisite pieces celebrate the revered place that Show Panda medals have earned at numismatic conventions around the world,” said Mateo Zhao, NGC Senior Vice President of Business Development in Asia. “We are immensely pleased to have certified these important medals, which pay tribute to the artistry and heritage of numismatics."
The medals were struck in Proof format and are available in several metal compositions, including gilt copper, gilt silver and silver. The obverse features a dragon and a dragon pearl, which reflects that the year 2024 is the Chinese Year of Dragon. It is inscribed with “Hong Kong Show Panda 40 Anniversary Commemorative” in Chinese and English.
The reverse includes a dynamic montage of images, including the panda from the 1984 Hong Kong Coin Show Panda Medal. It also features the neon lights of Hong Kong against the background of the stylistic street view of Hong Kong. The logo of the Holiday Inn, Golden Mile, where the 1984 Panda medal was released and the 2024 40th anniversary Panda medal will be released, is also shown on this side.
The 1-ounce 2024 Hong Kong Show Panda 40th Anniversary Medals have a limited mintage of 40 Gilt Silver, 100 Silver and 1,000 Gilt Copper, as well as a small number of Uniface Probas struck in various metal compositions showing either the obverse or reverse.
China has been issuing special commemorative Panda medals since 1984 to honor coin shows around the world. Their limited mintage, unique designs and value to collectors make these Chinese Panda medals highly sought after in the numismatic and investment communities, contributing to their status as one of the most distinguished numismatic series globally.
