The Royal Mint Offers Historic Trial of the Pyx Coins Certified by NGC in Stack's Bowers Auction
Posted on 1/31/2024
More than 1,300 British coins from The Royal Mint’s historic public Trial of the Pyx have been certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) and are being offered in a Stack's Bowers sale. Bidding is already underway for the Historic Test Pieces from the 2023 Trial of the Pyx, presented on behalf of The Royal Mint in Session A and Session B auctions, which are being held February 13-14, 2024.
Among the highlights of the unprecedented sale is a Great Britain 2022 Gold 5 Pounds - Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee graded NGC Brilliant Proof (Session A, lot 1197). Tested in the annual Trial of the Pyx, the coin went through what is one of the oldest judicial ceremonies in the United Kingdom, which dates back to 1282. The Trial is an independent form of quality control, ensuring the composition, diameter, weight and design are standard for each coin. This particular £5 crown was struck as part of the British Monarchy's first-ever Platinum Jubilee celebrations, depicting the final coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Another highlight of the sale is a lot of four Great Britain 2022 Rolling Stones 60th Anniversary coins (Gold 200 Pounds, Gold 100 Pounds, Gold 25 Pounds and Silver 2 Pounds), each graded either NGC Brilliant Proof or NGC Brilliant Uncirculated (Session B, lot 2188). Created by The Royal Mint in partnership with the iconic British band to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Rolling Stones' formation, these commemoratives were the first-ever British coins to feature the group. The coins include an outline image of the band in concert and the classic Rolling Stones name and font that were used during the band's legendary 1973 tour.
NGC authenticated these historic coins and encapsulated them with an elegant Trial of the Pyx label that features the logo of The Royal Mint and the facsimile signature of its CEO, Anne Jessopp. The offerings are diverse, from Britannias and Sovereigns to commemoratives celebrating the Harry Potter franchise.
