Nine NGC-certified US Rarities Realize Six Figures in Heritage Sale

A rare Proof Double Eagle and one of the first coins ever authorized by the United States government each realized more than $200,000 in a recent auction. They were among hundreds of coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) in Heritage Auctions' FUN US Coins Signature Auction 1371 on January 10-14, 2024.

The top NGC-certified lot in the auction was a 1906 Double Eagle graded NGC PF 66 (lot 4407) that realized $264,000. There are 94 Proof examples recorded of the 1906 Proof Double Eagle, with only about half that number estimated to have survived today. The NGC Census contains no examples graded higher numerically than this one.

Another highlight of the sale was a 1792 J-7 Half Disme graded NGC MS 62 (lot 4038) that realized $210,000. The 1792 Half Disme is the first official silver coinage of the United States, making it one of the most historic issues in American numismatics. The coins are coveted by collectors for their historic significance and their direct ties to Founding Father Thomas Jefferson, who was Secretary of State at the time and who is believed to have deposited the silver that was used to strike the coins. There are 39 examples listed in the NGC Census, with only eight graded higher.

• a 1795 Small Eagle $5 graded NGC MS 62 (lot 4328) that realized $132,000
• a 1799 Small Stars $10 graded NGC MS 64 (lot 4362) that realized $105,000
• a 1928 Hawaii Half Dollar graded NGC PF 66 Matte (lot 4189) that realized $102,000
• an 1800 Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 65 (lot 4096) that realized $99,000
• a 1795 Half Dollar graded NGC MS 64 (lot 4064) that realized $99,000
• a 1918/7 Standing Liberty Quarter graded NGC MS 66 (lot 4055) that realized $93,000
• an 1887 $10 graded NGC PF 65 Cameo (lot 4382) that realized $87,000
• a 1795 Small Eagle $5 graded NGC AU 58 (lot 4329) that realized $84,000
