Champion 2023 Macau Auction Features Chinese Rarities Graded by NGC, PMG and ASG

Bidding is underway for the Champion 2023 Macau Auction, which features about 200 collectible coins, banknotes and stamps graded by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®), Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) and Authenticated Stamp Guaranty® (ASG®). Featuring rarities pedigreed to the Chinese Family Collection and the H.F. Bowker Collection, the sale is the 10th anniversary Macau Auction for Champion and will be held November 26, 2023.

The top coin in the auction is a China (1838-50) Taiwan Silver Dollar graded NGC XF 40 (lot 160), which has an estimate of $20,000 to $40,000. The NGC Census records 11 examples of this rare coin, but this is one of only three numerically graded; the other eight are Details-graded, mostly due to Chopmarks.

• a China 2023 2-ounce Macau Numismatic Society 10th Anniversary Gold Panda Medal graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo (lot 267), with an estimate of $8,000 to $16,000
• a Niue 2023 Gold Dollar - Legend of Chu, 55th Anniversary graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo (lot 269), with an estimate of $6,500 to $13,000
• a China 1906-dated Gold 2 Mace - Fantasy graded NGC UNC Details and pedigreed to the Chinese Family Collection (lot 188), with an estimate of $6,000 to $12,000
• a Japan M8(1875) Yen graded NGC AU Details and pedigreed to the Chinese Family Collection (lot 232), with an estimate of $5,000 to $10,000
• a France (c. 1876) Mineral Industry Society, Merley Gold Medal graded NGC MS 61 PL (lot 274), with an estimate of $4,000 to $8,000

The oldest paper money collectible in the auction is a China / Empire 1368-99 1 Kuan graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (lot 90), with an estimate of $3,000 to $6,000. These Ming Dynasty notes are popular with collectors and generally sell for thousands of dollars whenever they are offered. Over 400 of these notes are listed in the PMG Population Report, and this example has an above-average grade.

The top ASG-certified stamp in the auction is a China 1967 8 Fen - September 9, Chinese Family Promotion graded ASG XF 90 Mint OG (lot 30). This stamp has an estimate of $200 to $400.
