NGC Certifies Rare Variety of 1796 Silver Dollar
Posted on 11/13/2023
Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) is excited to have recently been entrusted to grade a seldom-seen variety of Silver Dollar. The rare piece of American numismatic history was attributed through NGC’s VarietyPlus® service as a 1796 Small Date Small Letters Silver Dollar, BB-62, B-3. It earned a grade of NGC VF Details.
Advanced collectors of Early Dollars (1794-1804) are especially interested in varieties — variations in the dies that are identifiable upon close inspection of the coin. VarietyPlus recognizes 147 varieties of Early Dollars. For instance, the reverse has a berry below the A in STATES that is only present on certain varieties, including BB-62.
The coin is being offered in Heritage Auctions’ FUN US Coins Signature Auction #1371 in January 2024. It is one of only three confirmed examples known to the collecting community.
The NGC VarietyPlus program is a comprehensive service designed for coin collectors and numismatists seeking to identify and authenticate coin varieties and errors. This program is especially valuable for individuals interested in exploring the intricacies of coinage, as it provides expert analysis and attribution of various coin types, including doubled dies, repunched mintmarks and other notable varieties. By offering specialized labeling and certification for these distinctive coins, NGC VarietyPlus enhances the understanding and value of collectible coins while providing collectors with a trusted resource for assessing the unique characteristics that make each coin special.
