A Stack’s Bowers Hong Kong Auction on October 12 included seven NGC-certified coins that sold for six figures.

Gold and silver vintage Chinese rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) were among the top coins in the Stack’s Bowers Hong Kong Auction Rarities Night on October 12, 2023. In all, seven NGC-certified coins each realized six figures in the sale.

The top NGC-certified lot was a China 1926 Shantung Gold 10 Dollars graded NGC MS 65 (lot 30116), which sold for $444,000. This coin, along with its larger 20 Dollars counterpart, was commissioned by Zhang Zongchang, a colorful figure known as the "Dogmeat General." For a brief time in the 1920s, he ruled Shantung, a coastal province halfway between Beijing and Shanghai. He was driven from power in 1928 and later assassinated. Only six of these rarities are recorded in the NGC Census, with only one graded higher.

Also finishing strong was a China YR38(1949) Kweichow Bamboo Dollar graded NGC XF 45 (lot 30112), which realized $318,000. The highly desirable Bamboo Dollar gets its name from the bamboo stalks featured on the reverse side. NGC has certified fewer than 30 of these rare coins, and only five are graded higher in the NGC Census.
