NGC-certified Russian Coin Realizes $278,000 in Künker Auction
Posted on 10/6/2023
Two rare vintage European coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) impressed in Künker Auction 391 on September 25-26, 2023. Each coin realized six figures and led an assortment of high-value NGC-certified rarities.
Topping the auction was a Russia 1841CNB 12 Roubles graded NGC MS 61 (lot 458) that realized €264,000 (about $278,000), several times its pre-auction estimate of €50,000. Struck in platinum, this coin dates to the reign of Emperor Nicholas, which was marked by a strict adherence to autocracy, censorship and suppression of political dissent. This rare coin is the only one of its kind in the NGC Census.
Also earning six figures was a Germany 1783 VF Schwarzenberg 10 Ducat graded NGC MS 65★ (lot 959), which realized €204,000 (about $215,000). This coin was struck for John I Nepomuk, the fifth Prince of Schwarzenberg and Duke of Krumlov, who ruled until 1789. The territory he ruled was small; at the time, modern-day Germany and nearby lands were a patchwork of diverse states and territories, each with its own currencies and rulers, reflecting the fragmented nature of the Holy Roman Empire.
