Two Very Rare Double Eagles Graded by NGC Share the Spotlight in Heritage Sale
Posted on 8/31/2023
Two Double Eagles are among over 300 rare US coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are being offered in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Bidding is already underway for the Long Beach Expo US Coins Signature Auction, which will be held on September 14-17, 2023.
Among the highlights is an 1899 $20 graded NGC PF 67 Ultra Cameo (lot 3183). The coin has a mintage of a mere 84, with only a fraction of that number likely to have survived. This particular example is unsurpassed in grade by any 1899 Proof Double Eagle in the NGC Census, and the opportunity to acquire a high-grade rarity like this doesn’t happen often. More than two weeks before the sale, bidding had already surpassed $300,000.
Also offered is an 1870 $20 graded NGC PF 65 Ultra Cameo (lot 3182). From a mintage of 35, a dozen or fewer are thought to survive today — and several of those are permanently housed in institutional collections, according to the auction house. Bidding is also expected to be lively for this seldom-seen coin.
Other NGC-certified highlights in this auction include:
- a 1793 Chain “AMERI.” Cent graded NGC VF 30 BN (lot 3008)
- an 1855-D Gold Dollar graded NGC AU 53 (lot 3094)
