Heritage Sale Offers Coveted English Coins Certified by NGC
Posted on 8/11/2023
A Henry VII Sovereign and two iconic rarities of Queen Victoria are among 900 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) being offered in a sale presented by Heritage Auctions. Hand-struck in gold over 500 years ago, the Sovereign is leading the way in the ANA World & Ancient Coins Platinum Session and Signature Auction, which is being held August 17-19, 2023.
Bidding for the England 1492 Henry VII Gold Sovereign graded NGC AU 50 (lot 31158) is rapidly nearing its pre-auction estimate of $500,000. The Royal Mint re-acquired this rarity that it originally created hundreds of years ago. The Mint submitted the coin to NGC for certification and NGC encapsulated the gold Sovereign with a special certification label that includes The Royal Mint logo and the caption, "The Original Maker."
After defeating Richard III at the end of the Wars of the Roses, Henry Tudor took over the throne as King Henry VII of England in 1485. To celebrate his reign and assert his authority over the empire, Henry VII commissioned the first gold Sovereign in 1489, with the obverse featuring an image of himself seated on a wooden throne and holding an orb and scepter. The reverse shows a quartered shield of England layered over a Tudor rose. The historical significance of the coin is immense, with the rarity being a direct tie to both The Royal Mint's original location at the Tower of London and the first Tudor king's reign.
The Heritage sale includes two examples of the Great Britain 1939 Una and the Lion 5 Pounds, including one graded NGC PF 64 Ultra Cameo (lot 31213), with an estimate of $200,000 to $400,000. This British rarity is one of the most collected types in all of numismatics, with collectors coveting the coin for its direct ties to the monarchy and its appealing design. The coin depicts the bust of Queen Victoria from the earliest years of her reign on the obverse. The reverse features the iconic allegorical imagery of Victoria as Una guiding a lion, which represents Great Britain.
