Stack’s Bowers Offers Infamous Rarity Tied to Caesar's Murder and Certified by NGC Ancients

Posted on 8/9/2023

The iconic coin known as an EID MAR was struck by Brutus after Caesar's assassination and is one of the most sought-after rarities in numismatics.

Hundreds of ancient and world coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) are being offered in an upcoming Stack's Bowers sale, including an EID MAR Silver Denarius, which is one of the most well-known and valuable coins from ancient times. Bidding is already underway for the August 2023 Global Showcase Auction, with Sessions B, C and E being held on August 15 and 17, 2023.

The top ancient coin in the auction is a Roman Imperatorial Brutus (d. 42 B.C.) Silver Denarius EID MAR graded NGC Ancients VF, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface (lot 50103). The famous coin's front shows a liberty cap flanked by a pair of daggers above the legend EID MAR, a bold reminder of Brutus' involvement in Julius Caesar's assassination on the Ides of March in 44 B.C. The event helped shape the Western world, making these infamous coins highly sought-after by collectors for their rarity and historical significance. This coin has an estimate of $150,000 to $300,000.
