NGC-certified Early Quarter Among Highlights in Heritage Sale of US Coins
Posted on 7/27/2023
A rare Quarter from the early 19th century is among over 500 US coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) offered in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale that is one of the premier numismatic events of the year. Online bidding is already underway for the ANA US Coins Signature Auction #1364, which will be held August 15-20, 2023.
The top lot in the auction is an 1807 B-2 Liberty Quarter graded NGC MS 66★ and pedigreed to the Newman and Green collections (lot 3079). The early Quarter displays colorful tones throughout, including a blend of orange and gold at the center, surrounded by hues of blue and turquoise. This particular 1807 B-2 Quarter is the finest known example of the variety and the second finest of either variety.
Another standout rarity in the upcoming auction is the (1800) Gold Washington Funeral-Skull Medal graded NGC MS 63 (lot 3030). This extremely rare gold funeral medal is one of only two known in the world, according to the auction house, with this example being the finer of the pair and the only example in the NGC Census. The medal has also been part of one of the great collections assembled in modern times: the Donald G. Partrick Collection.
Additionally, the Heritage sale includes a 1861-S Paquet $20 graded NGC AU 58 (lot 3258). Struck at both the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints in 1861, the Double Eagles with the Paquet reverse are one of the most famous and desired coins in the Liberty Head series. They differ from the standard issue in several ways, including taller, thinner letters. The NGC Census lists 81 examples, none of them in Mint State.
Another highlight of the auction is a 1909-O Indian $5 graded NGC MS 65 (lot 3212). This Half Eagle is part of the singular O-mint issue of the Indian Head series and is among the final coinage produced at the New Orleans Mint. This particular example is the sole-finest certified by NGC, making the New Orleans rarity highly sought-after.
