NGC Special Labels and Designations for the 2023 American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin and Silver Medal

Posted on 8/1/2023

The new gold coin and silver medal will be released on August 10, and NGC is offering special labels and designations. Special submission instructions must be followed. See the "Submission Instructions" section of this article.

On August 10, 2023, the US Mint is releasing the 2023-W American Liberty $100 High Relief Gold Coin and the 2023-P American Liberty Silver Medal, which celebrate our nation's freedom. Struck at the West Point Mint, the gold coin has a mintage limit of only 12,500 while the silver medal, which was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, has a mintage limit of only 75,000.

To complement the coins and medals, Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) is offering a selection of special certification labels, including the American Liberty Flag label and the ever-popular NGC Early Releases and First Releases labels. Coins received by NGC within the first 30 days of release are eligible for NGC's Early Releases and First Releases designations and labels. Learn more about Early Releases and First Releases here. The obverses of the gold coin and silver medal depict a bristlecone pine tree, which symbolizes American liberty through a modern interpretation of the concept. As a native species of California, Nevada and Utah, the tree is believed to be one of the oldest living organisms on earth, with bristlecone pines living upward of 5,000 years. Bristlecone pines are also known to grow in areas where other plants cannot survive and are often the species first to repopulate the land following cataclysmic changes. The coins and medals feature the ancient trees as a bold representation of the perseverance of American liberty.

The reverse features a full profile of a young bald eagle standing on a rocky formation only moments before it takes flight. The one-ounce coin contains .999 fine 24-karat gold, includes a reeded edge and a 'W' mintmark. The one-ounce medal contains .999 fine silver and bears the 'P' mintmark representing Philadelphia.
