A new bill will require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint commemorative coins in 2023.

The Numismatic Industry Coinage Advisory Committee (NICAC) of the National Coin and Bullion Association (NCBA) recently announced that a bill supporting one of its 2023 US Mint Commemorative Coin recommendations has been introduced to Congress.

The bill, H.R. 2838: National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) 75th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act, will require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins commemorating the 75th anniversary of the first recognized race held under the sanctioning of the “National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing” (NASCAR), run at Daytona Beach on February 15, 1948.

H.R. 2838 has garnered bipartisan support, with Representative Garret Graves (R-LA) agreeing to sponsor and champion the bill. Representative Jeff Jackson (D-NC) is co-sponsoring. The bill was introduced in the House on April 25, 2023, and referred to the House Financial Services and House Budget committees, where it awaits further action.

Max Spiegel, President of the Certified Collectibles Group, which includes Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), serves on the Board of Directors of the NCBA.

"A NASCAR commemorative coin will appeal broadly within the numismatic community and beyond, helping to grow and enrich our hobby," says Spiegel. "I encourage our members to write their representative in support of H.R. 2838."

You can find your representative and their contact information at www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative.

Since the modern commemorative coin program began in 1982, the US Mint has struck commemorative coins celebrating and honoring American people, places, events and institutions. Many of these have proven very popular among collectors, such as the 2000 Library of Congress Commemorative Coins and the National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coins of 2014. The US Mint has raised more than $500 million in surcharges through the modern commemorative coin program to help fund various charitable causes.
