Stunning Greek Rarity Certified by NGC Ancients Offered in CNG Sale
Posted on 5/11/2023
A rare and beautifully preserved coin minted in ancient Scythia during the 4th century BC highlights more than 150 rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are being offered in an upcoming Classical Numismatic Group, LLC sale. Bidding is already underway for the CNG Feature Auction 123, which will be held May 22-23, 2023.
One of the top coins in the auction is a Bosporus, Panticapaeum c.340-320 BC Gold Stater graded NGC Ancients MS, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 105), with an estimate of $75,000. This gold stater features the bearded head of a deity — perhaps the god Pan or Silenus — opposite a griffin with a spear in its mouth, standing on an ear of grain. Located in eastern Crimea, Panticapaeum was an important trade hub on the fringe of the Classical Greek world. Its gold coins attest to its wealth, which was built on exporting to the Greeks a great many products, including wheat, gold, fish, timber and slaves.
