SINCONA Offers NGC-certified British and Portuguese Rarities

Posted on 5/1/2023

Two empires at the height of their power are represented by the top coins in the May 2023 sale.

Two rare coins graded by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that represent the British and Portuguese empires at their height are the stars of an upcoming SINCONA auction. Bidding is already underway for Auction 83, which is being held May 15-17, 2023.

The top coin in the auction is a Great Britain 1839 Una and the Lion 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 60 Ultra Cameo (lot 2097). The coin's design is renowned for its depiction of the young Queen Victoria on both the obverse and the reverse, where she is shown as the character of Lady Una guiding a lion in the epic poem "The Faerie Queene." Regarded as the peak of British numismatics, Una and the Lion coins are a top highlight in any auction. This example has a starting price of 150,000 CHF (about $168,000).

Three centuries earlier, Portuguese King John III oversaw his empire at its strongest, as it colonized Brazil and expanded its influence in Asia. The auction features a rare coin from his reign: a Portugal (1521-57) 10 Cruzados graded NGC AU 53 (lot 3351). It has a starting price of 50,000 CHF (about $56,000).
