Extremely Rare CSG-certified Spanish Gold Coin from 1591 Tops Sedwick Auction

Posted on 4/21/2023

Over 400 years old, the coin could sell for $100,000, according to auction estimates.

An extremely rare Spanish gold coin dated to King Philip II's reign is among hundreds of US and world coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) offered in an upcoming Sedwick sale. Bidding is already underway for the Treasure, World, U.S. Coin & Paper Money Auction 33, which is set for May 3-4, 2023.

A top highlight of the auction is a Spain 1591M C Madrid 4 Escudos graded NGC MS 64 (lot 27), with an estimate of $50,000 to $100,000. The 4 Escudos gold coin is believed to be the highest denomination produced in Madrid using the Ingenio de la Tijera ("shearing machine"), a novel minting process. According to the auction house, this example is the highest graded of the three known to exist.

Additionally, the first-ever NGC-certified shipwreck treasure gold bar is being offered in the same Sedwick sale. The 1650 Colombia Gold (336.3g) Maravillas piece, certified by NGC as genuine (lot 60), was lost for more than 300 years. The Spanish treasure galleon Maravillas sunk off Grand Bahama Island on January 5, 1656, burying the unique Colombian gold "finger" bar in the sunken ship on the ocean floor, where it lay until it was discovered in the late 1980s. More than a week before the auction, bidding had already exceeded the pre-auction estimate of $40,000 to $80,000. You can read more about this astounding historical treasure here.
