NGC Grades and Encapsulates Oversized Gold Lunar Coins

Posted on 2/1/2023

The Year of the Tiger coins demonstrate NGC's range of holder options for extremely large coins.

Not long before the Year of the Tiger came to a close, Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) graded and encapsulated four very large Year of the Tiger commemorative coins issued by China. Pedigreed to a prominent collector, the four rare coins have enormous numismatic value, in addition to containing nearly a million dollars' worth of gold.

Among them is a 10 Kilogram Gold 100,000 Yuan graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo. From a maximum mintage of 18, this is the highest denomination and weight of China's 2022 Year of the Tiger coins. NGC used its Mega Holder in order to encapsulate this massive coin.

NGC also certified a 2 Kilogram Gold 20,000 Yuan that shares the same design from the 10 Kilogram of a realistic-looking mother tiger and her cub. Graded NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo, this coin is encapsulated in NGC's large Oversize Holder.

These large coins were submitted to NGC by prominent Macau coin collector C.S. Wong. He has submitted many coins to NGC over the years, including ones from the Year of the Ox and Year of the Rat.

China issues coins annually with impressive designs featuring the animals of the Chinese zodiac. The latest lunar series coins have been released in the past few weeks in order to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, which begins January 22, 2023. NGC offers special labels to celebrate the animals on the lunar coins; to learn more, click here.
