NGC-certified Russian Rarities in the Spotlight in Stack’s Bowers Sale
Posted on 12/22/2022
Two of the greatest rarities in Russian numismatics are among hundreds of world coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) being offered by Stack’s Bowers. Bidding is underway for the NYINC World Coins auction, which is divided into Sessions B, D and E, which will take place January 14-13, 2023.
The top coin in the auction is a Russia 1835 Imperial Family 1.5 Roubles graded NGC MS 63 and pedigreed to the Sigma Collection (Session D, lot 22212). This coin has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000. Its obverse shows the bare head of Emperor Nicholas I, while the reverse shows his wife, Alexandra Feodorovna, and their children: Crown Prince Aleksandr Nikolaevich, Grand Duchesses Maria Nikolaevna, Olga Nikolaevna, Alexandra Nikolaevna, and Grand Dukes Konstantin Nikolaevich, Nikolai Nikolaevich, and Mikhail Nikolaevich. The design is one of the most famous in Russian numismatics, and ones dated 1835 are among the most scarce.
Also featured is a Russia 1902 37.5 Roubles graded NGC MS 61 and pedigreed to the Sigma Collection (Session D, lot 22242) with an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000. This coin was struck at a time shortly after Russia went onto the international gold standard. The inclusion of 100 Francs in the reverse legend clearly demonstrated the economic ties that Russia had with lenders in France. The coin shows Nicholas II, the last emperor of Russia.
