Rare NGC-certified Australian Coins Expected to Bring Six Figures Each in Heritage Sale

Posted on 12/12/2022

Most of the rarities date back to the 1850s, when the gold rush era in Australia was beginning.

A group of rare Australian coins, certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®), are being offered by Heritage Auctions. Bidding for the NYINC World & Ancient Coins Platinum Session and Signature Auction begins in mid-December for the January 9, 2023, sale.

Of particular interest in this auction is an Australia 1853 Sovereign graded NGC PF 63 Ultra Cameo (lot 32138) with an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000. This coin was struck to celebrate the United Kingdom establishing its first mint outside of Great Britain in Sydney. Though three other examples are known to be in museums, this coin is presumed to be unique in private hands, according to the auction house.

Another highlight is this Australia Undated Adelaide Assay Gold Ingot graded NGC MS 63 (lot 32123) with an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000. Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, and these rare ingots are a testament to its link to the Australian Gold Rush, including a Government Assay Office. This fascinating piece of Australian numismatic history is pedigreed to the historic collections of King Farouk and Virgil Brand.
