Rare NGC-certified Roman Gold Coin Realizes Over $300,000 in NAC Auction

Many rare Greek and Roman coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) sold for six figures each in Numismatica Ars Classica Auctions 133, 134 and 135 on November 21, 2022.
The top NGC-certified highlight was a Roman Empire Manlia Scantilla, AD 193 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface (Auction 135, lot 317), which realized CHF 295,200 (about $307,000). Manlia Scantilla married Didius Julianus, a Roman general who ruled as emperor for just over two months before being assassinated in AD 193, an infamous year known as the Year of Five Emperors.
Another top coin was a Roman Empire Quintillus, AD 270 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch AU★ 5/5 Strike, 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 135, lot 358), which realized CHF 270,600 (about $284,000). On its obverse is an image of Quintillus, who ruled only for a few weeks in AD 270 before meeting an untimely death.
Other six-figure NGC-certified coins sold in this auction were:

- a Roman Empire Aelius Caesar, AD 136-138 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch MS★, 5/5 Strike, 5/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 135, lot 295) which realized CHF 221,400 (about $232,000)
- a Roman Empire Plautilla, AD 202-205 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch AU★, 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface (Auction 135, lot 337) which realized CHF 196,800 (about $207,000)
- a Roman Empire Macrinus, AD 217-218 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch MS★, 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface, with Fine Style (Auction 135, lot 340) which realized CHF 184,500 (about $194,000)
- a Roman Empire Hadrian, AD 117-138 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch AU★, 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 135, lot 289) which realized CHF 159,900 (about $169,000)
- a Roman Empire Domitian, AD 81-96 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients MS★ 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface (Auction 135, lot 283) which realized CHF 159,900 (about $169,000)
- a Roman Empire Julia Domna, AD 193-217 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch AU★, 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface (Auction 135, lot 328) which realized CHF 147,600 (about $155,000)
- a Roman Empire Geta, AD 209-211 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 135, lot 339) which realized CHF 135,300 (about $143,000)
- a Roman Empire Vitellius, AD 69 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients AU, 5/5 Strike, 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 135, lot 277) which realized CHF 123,000 (about $129,000)
- a Roman Empire Caracalla, AD 198-217 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface (Auction 135, lot 332) which realized CHF 116,850 (about $123,000)
- a Ptolemaic Kingdom Berenice II (d.221 BC) Gold Octodrachm graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike, 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 134, lot 256) which realized CHF 101,475 (about $107,000)
- a Roman Empire Galba, AD 68-69 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients XF, 5/5 Strike, 2/5 Surface (Auction 135, lot 276) which realized CHF 98,400 (about $103,000)
