Posted on 11/18/2022
A rare Chinese silver pattern is among over 750 rare coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) that are being offered in a December sale. Bidding is already underway for the HKINF World and Ancient Coins sale, being held by Heritage Auctions on December 7-9, 2022.
With an estimate of $300,000 to $350,000, the top lot in the auction is a China YR8 (1919) Pattern Silver Dollar graded NGC SP 64 (lot 34104). Pedigreed to the Tony Ma Collection, this coin ranks among the scarcest portrait patterns of Yuan Shih-kai, who ruled post-imperial China from 1912 until his death in 1916. His portrait appeared on Chinese coinage during his reign and for several years after his death.
Also offered is a China YR12 (1923) Small Characters Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 62 (lot 34111) with an estimate between $40,000 and $60,000. Pedigreed to the Edgar Mandel Collection, this coin bears the renowned “Dragon and Phoenix” design on the obverse.
Another standout is a China 1921 Hsu Shih Chang Bottom Legend S$1 graded NGC MS 62 (lot 34106) with an estimate between $40,000 and $60,000. The obverse has a portrait of Hsu Shih-chang, who was China’s president from 1918 to 1922. Its reverse shows the pavilion at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, giving rise to the coin’s nickname: Pavilion Dollar.
