Two Impressive Double Eagles Each Sell for Over $200,000 in Stack's Bowers Sale

The NGC-certified coins include a 1900 Liberty Head Double Eagle that was part of a nearly complete Proof Set.

Two Liberty Head Double Eagles certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) saw impressive results in a recent Stack’s Bowers sale. The coins were featured in Session 5 – Rarities Night of the November 2022 Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo, which ended on November 1, 2022.

The top NGC-certified coin in the sale was a spectacular 1892 Liberty Head Double Eagle graded NGC PF 65★ Ultra Cameo (lot 5110), one of the finer examples in the NGC Census. Only 93 1892 Proofs were struck, and only 35 are still known to exist, according to the auction house. This coin realized $228,000.

Meanwhile, a 1900 Liberty Head Double Eagle graded NGC PF 65 Cameo (lot 5141) realized an impressive $204,000. This 1900 Double Eagle was featured as part of a nearly complete 1900 Proof Set, where only the Barber Dime was missing. All gold denominations were present, and each coin sold individually in consecutive lots, with this Liberty Head Double Eagle realizing the highest price of them all.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the auction included:

  • an 1886 Liberty Head Eagle graded NGC PF 67 Cameo (lot 5100) that realized $144,000
  • a 1776 Pewter “CURRENCY” Continental Dollar graded NGC MS 64 (lot 5003) that realized $126,000
  • a 1776 Pewter “CURENCY” Continental Dollar graded NGC MS 63 (lot 5002) that realized $99,000
  • a 1911 Indian Eagle graded NGC PF 66 (lot 5103) that realized $84,000
  • a 1900 Liberty Head Eagle graded NGC PF 65 Ultra Cameo (lot 5140) that realized $84,000
  • a 1795 Gold Eagle graded NGC AU 55 (lot 5095) that realized $81,000
  • a 1900 Liberty Head Half Eagle graded NGC PF 66 Ultra Cameo (lot 5139) that realized $75,000
  • a 1924-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle graded NGC MS 65 (lot 5120) that realized $69,000

All prices realized include a buyer’s premium.
