NAC Offers Rare Gold Roman Coins Certified by NGC Ancients

More than 100 Greek and Roman coins graded by NGC Ancients are being offered by Numismatica Ars Classica in November 2022.

More than 100 rare Greek and Roman coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) are available in Numismatica Ars Classica Auctions 133, 134 and 135 on November 21, 2022.

A top highlight is a Roman Empire Quintillus, AD 270 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch AU★ 5/5 Strike, 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 135, lot 358). This coin has an estimate of CHF 150,000 (about $150,000). On its obverse is an image of Quintillus, who ruled only for a few weeks in AD 270 before meeting an untimely death.

The auction features another coin from a Roman whose taste of power was brief: a Roman Empire Manlia Scantilla, AD 193 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface (Auction 135, lot 317). It has an estimate of CHF 125,000 (about $125,000). Manlia Scantilla married Didius Julianus, a Roman general who ruled as emperor for just over two months before being assassinated in AD 193, an infamous year known as the Year of Five Emperors.

Also with an estimate of CHF 125,000 (about $125,000) is a Roman Empire Macrinus, AD 217-218 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch MS★, 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface, with Fine Style (Auction 135, lot 340). The coin depicts Macrinus, who was proclaimed emperor in 217. During his reign, he never visited Rome as he was preoccupied with conflict in the east. He was overthrown in a rebellion and later executed.
