Five NGC-certified European Gold Coins Each Realize Over $100,000

The Gadoury sale featured hundreds of NGC-certified coins from all over the world.

Five gold coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) realized six figures each in a Gadoury sale that was held on October 15, 2022. The five European coins were among hundreds of NGC-certified rarities from ancient times to the modern era in the auction.

Leading the NGC-certified offerings was a France 1832 Essai Gold Piefort 5 Francs graded NGC PF 65 Ultra Cameo that sold for €204,000 (about $204,000). The coin (lot 374) features Henri, Count of Chambord, who, in 1830, was disputedly the king of France for a week when he was 9 years old. This particular coin has the higher grade of the two examples recorded in the NGC Census.

Another French coin, a 1740A Gold Ecu graded NGC PF 62 Cameo (lot 310), realized €132,000 (about $132,000). Pedigreed to the Doctor F. Collection, this particular coin is the highest-graded example in the NGC Census. The obverse features Louis XV, who ruled France from 1715 to 1774 — the nation’s second-longest-reigning monarch.

Meanwhile, an Italy 1926R 100 Lire graded NGC MS 64 (lot 781) also realized €132,000 (about $132,000). The obverse features Victor Emmanuel III, who from 1900 to 1946 was the second-to-last king of Italy.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:

  • a France 1889A 100 Francs graded NGC PF 63 Cameo and pedigreed to the Doctor F. Collection (lot 423) that realized €114,000 (about $114,000)
  • a Hungary 1605 Transylvania 10 Ducat graded NGC MS 61 (lot 538) that realized €114,000 (about $114,000)
  • an England 1656 Cromwell Broad graded NGC MS 63+ PL (lot 484) that realized €78,000 (about $78,000)
  • a France 1855A 100 Francs graded NGC SP 62 (lot 393) that realized €72,000 (about $72,000)
  • an Italy 1913R PROVA 5 Lire graded NGC MS 64 Matte (lot 796) that realized €63,000 (about $63,000)
  • a France Napoleon Bonaparte Gold Medal graded NGC MS 63 and pedigreed to the Doctor F. Collection (lot 339) that realized €63,000 (about $63,000)
  • a Switzerland 1825 Bern 4 Ducat graded NGC MS 65+ PL (lot 887) that realized €60,000 (about $60,000)
