NGC Certifies Peterson Half Dimes

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation is pleased to announce that it has certified the superb collection of Capped Bust half dimes assembled by Dr. Glenn Peterson. Comprised of no less than 105 coins, this collection is without peer for both rarity and completeness. Each coin in this collection now bears the Peterson pedigree on its grading label.

Every known die marriage is represented in Dr. Peterson’s set, some with multiple die states, and NGC has attributed each of his coins by Logan/McCloskey numbers (Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837). NGC’s Research Director, David W. Lange, was delighted that Peterson chose NGC to showcase his fine collection. “This is truly a comprehensive collection and a labor of love,” Lange noted. “Glenn’s set will really enhance NGC’s certified population of Capped Bust half dimes by varieties, and his selection of our company confirms that NGC is unequaled for its variety attribution among the major grading services.”

Outstanding rarities featured in the Peterson Collection include 1829 LM-8, which NGC graded MS 61. Rare 1830 varieties include LM-5 (AU 58) and LM-11 (VF 35), the latter also featuring an incomplete planchet clip error that further adds to its numismatic value. This coin is one of several mint errors and terminal die state examples found within the Peterson Collection.

Another important rarity is LM-9.1, graded AU 58 by NGC. Two standout rarities from 1833 are LM-2 (AU 55) and LM-5 (MS 61). With the exception of 1833 LM-2, all of the rare varieties cited here were obtained by Dr. Peterson from last year’s auction sale by Bowers & Merena of the Russell Logan Collection. The late Russ Logan was co-author with Dr. John W. McCloskey of the book which is the standard reference for collectors of early half dimes. Obtaining these rare varieties was likely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and Glenn Peterson made the most of it, acquiring numerous specimens that now carry the Logan/Peterson pedigree.

The Peterson Collection features many half dimes that are exceptional for grade, too. 1831 LM-2, 1832 LM-6, 1832 LM-11.2 and 1835 LM-10 were each graded MS 65 by NGC, while Peterson’s 1836 LM-1.2 was certified as a superb MS 66.
