Heritage Offers Rare Roman Medallion Certified by NGC Ancients

Posted on 10/24/2022

More than 1,200 NGC-certified world and ancient coins are part of the sale on November 2-4, 2022.

Heritage Auctions is offering over 1,200 world and ancient coins — including a great rarity from an ill-fated Roman emperor — that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC). Bidding is already underway for the World and Ancient Coins Platinum Session and Signature Auction 3102, to be held November 2-4, 2022.

With an estimate of $100,000 to $200,000, the top lot in the auction is a Roman Empire, Maxentius AD 307-312 Gold Medallion graded NGC Ancients MS, 5/5 Strike and 2/5 Surface, with Fine Style, pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 31063). Heritage suggests this medallion was issued to commemorate the restoration of the temple of Urbis Veneris, which was damaged by a fire in AD 307. Parts of this structure remain standing today. Maxentius ruled only six years before he died in battle against Emperor Constantine I at the famous Battle of the Milvian Bridge on October 28, AD 312.
